Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How do I use the site?

A: First create a Profile. Then, check the Rideboard. If you don't see someone's post that works for you, post your own profile on the Rideboard for a specific date, or if you like, you can also 'Search Profiles'. Searching profiles lets you find profiles, even if they are not posted on the Rideboard. Next, call or leave a message for someone to make plans with. SkiCarpool lets you leave messages for other people and provides a mailbox to manage your messages.

Q: Does SkiCarpool work well on short notice?

A: Yes, use the Rideboard short notice. You could post late at night and someone could see your post and give you a call early in the morning. Just remember to be careful when carpooling with someone new.

Q: I created a profile but how come I can't login?

A: You need to activate your account. When you first create a profile, an email is sent to you with a link in it that you must click in order to activate the account. You can't login until the account is activated.

Q: How does gas money get handled?

A: Passengers should expect to contribute gas money, unless discussed otherwise. We suggest everyone split the cost, and it's always nice to cover all or part of the driver's share if there's more than one passenger in the vehicle, as a 'thanks for driving'...which encourages people to be willing to drive in the future. You can add whatever other text you want to the More Info field of your Profile, or when you post to the Rideboard for a specific date

Q: How accurate is the zip code distance calculation?

A: It would take a fair amount of rocket science to explain, so the short answer is, fairly. An entire zip code is considered single point, so all addresses in a zip code are essentially the same. Be generous in your search because the distance returned could be a few miles too short or too long, nor does it take into account an actual driving route.

Q: What can I do to make sure it's safe to carpool with someone, or several people?

A: Everyone had to agree to the Terms of Use when creating their Profile. You can read it again on the 'Legal' page. In addition, we recommend you exchange some verifiable personal information like a driver's license, and meet in a public place before committing to going on the trip. Ya know, make sure you get a good vibe and aren't creeped out. Protect yourself, we cannot do it for you!

Q: Do I need to contact people individually, or can I send a message to a bunch of people at once?

A: Individually. If you want a bunch of people to know your plans, then you should be posting to the Rideboard for a specific date.
